Note from the Director As we celebrate Spring it is a joy to celebrate the continued growth of parish nursing and health ministry programs. We just completed our annual Parish Nurse Basic Preparation Course at Spirit in the Desert Lutheran Retreat Center. We had 16 wonderful women attend the week long program to help prepare them for parish nurse ministry. Existing parish nurses also continue to grow in their roles and their ministries. A special workshop presented by Eloise Cole and sponsored by Hansen Mortuary, “Utilizing Expressive Techniques and Storytelling For Processing Loss” was a very enriching program for all who attended. We are grateful for their gift to us. We had our first simultaneous East and West Spiritual Days of Renewal. This structure was chosen based on input from the parish nurses. It is awesome to witness the spiritual beauty that radiates from the men and women who do this ministry. We felt honored to be with them for this time. |
Plans for our upcoming Celebration Luncheon in May are underway. This year the date is Wednesday, May 19, 2004. The Beatitudes Campus will again host our lunch. We hope you will be able to join us. The Nurse & Health Ministries Network is supported by the generosity of many people. A large portion of our budget is funded through financial grants. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our grantors. Their commitment to our community and financial support of Nurse & Health Ministries Network testifies to the beneficial work of parish nursing and congregational health programs. We would not be able to do what we do without them. Our thanks and appreciation go to our generous grantors for this year: BHHS Legacy Foundation, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust and the Area Agency on Aging, Region One. It is through their financial support, community donations and the generosity of Center D.O.A.R. that we are able to continue our mission: "Nurse & Health Ministries Network assists congregations, health institutions, nurses and lay people of all faiths in developing and maintaining effective parish nurse and health ministry programs. Established in 1994, we are a community-based network that serves as a resource and provides ongoing consultation, education and peer support throughout Arizona to promote health in mind, body, and spirit." We are very grateful to all who make our mission come alive. Blessings, Sandy Somers, RN, MS

Labyrinths
Labyrinths have a long history in Christian churches as a tool for meditation and prayer. To find out more about labyrinths and where they are located in Arizona you can visit: www.veriditas.net . St. Barnabus Episcopal Church, the Franciscan Renewal Center, Trinity Cathedral and Via de Cristo United Methodist Church house some of the Valley's labyrinths. The parish nurses experienced a labyrinth with stations at our Day of Renewal on the east side. The 17 x 23 foot labyrinth is on canvas and is available for check-out from the Nurse and Health Ministries Network. Please contact Sandy at (602) 274-5022 for more information.
