 Note from the Director

“What do you want? Is what you are doing getting you what you want? If not, you need to change what you are doing. “

These are questions a professor taught in a Reality Therapy class I took in Graduate School.  Reality Therapy is a cognitive approach to counseling that I did not necessarily espouse, although, I continue to find these questions helpful when I look at aspects of my life that I would like to be different. As we move into 2003, it is a good time to examine what we would like to be different in the new year. Such as:

Spiritually – What do I want?- To live a faith-filled life - Am I taking time for prayer, meditation, discernment?

Physically – What do I want?- To be healthy and fit - Am I watching what I eat and getting exercise?

Emotionally – What do I want?- To be emotionally healthy -Do I nurture those relationships that are life-giving? Do I limit my “yes’s” to maintain a healthy balance?

We know there are many things we cannot control, but for those areas of your life you can control, I hope 2003 is a year where you get what you want.

Blessings,

Sandy Somers, RN, MS

A Grateful Heart

Rose Coulter, RN

Assistant Director

That uninvited houseguest called the almighty respiratory flu bug decided to camp out at my home last week.  In between sleeping, coughing, and chicken noodle soup, God graced me with reflective time.  I can be so caught up in the everyday doing of tasks, commitments, and meetings, that I loose sight of being in the moment and being grateful for all of the blessings I am given so freely.  I was reminded of the manna in Exodus and how the people grumbled and complained and forgot how blessed they were to receive the manna every day that was sufficient to meet their needs.  As I read the story I can easily criticize them in their grumbling against God but how often am I guilty of complaining and do not serve with a grateful heart.  How often do I not live in the present moment.  I fail to be grateful for the everyday workings of my own body until it is not working properly.  How grateful I am for the return of strength and health.  As a nation we reflect on the loss of life of astronauts, as they were so close to home in a routine mission that many of us are not even tuned in to until disaster strikes.  We again become mindful and we are grateful for the protection that surrounds each of us every day with or without our acknowledgment.  I offer this word gratitude to you.  Perhaps you can take a few moments to reflect, own, and embrace the manna in your life.   I am reminded of Psalm 100.  Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.                               With gratitude, Rose
