Note from the Director
Fall is underway and many of you have programs that are gearing up. It is exciting as we plan, prepare and implement our offerings. Balance of the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual can sometimes become a challenge. We are offering a day of spiritual nurture this fall to enrich ourselves, so we can be more effective companions on our journey with others. It is entitled, “Journey of the Soul: Walking the Sacred Path”. We are privileged to have Doris Klein, CSA, who has led numerous offerings for parish nurses throughout the country, lead us in this day. We hope you will be able to join us.
Blessings, Sandy Somers, RN, MS

Your Well BeingRose Coulter, RNAssistant Director Center D.O.A.R’s library contains a book entitled, “Anchoring Your Well Being” by Howard Clinebell, Ph.D. This author spoke directly to my heart. Self-responsibility means accepting the fact that the buck stops with me for most of the decisions that determine how healthy or unhealthy my lifestyle is. Intention and choice are themes present throughout the Bible’s ethical insights about how I can live a healthy life. I am the only person who can walk the road that leads toward a healthier life for me. Having wise guides at critical points on the journey can be extremely important, even lifesaving. So consulting caring and competent health professionals, therapists, and teachers when I need their special knowledge and skills are valuable tools. This author reminds us that burnout is the common cold of vocational health. We are vulnerable to burnout if we tend to be idealistic, perfectionist, hard driving, and people pleasing and if you suffer, at times, from shaky self-esteem. Increasing our own self-care is of high priority. Clinebell recommends increasing our ability of recognizing the signs of burnout just as we would recognize signs of cancer or other medical challenges and then seeking professional counseling when needed. Among those signs are: a creeping loss of zest, energy, and passion; chronic fatigue in spite of rest; inability to say no; decreasing efficiency; increasing feelings of depression, cynicism, inability to cope; frequent or multiple psychosomatic illnesses; chronic feelings of falling behind; and spiritual illnesses such as hopelessness and despair and a loss of any sense of vocation in one’s worth. Counseling options available to you, beyond your faith community might include: Arizona Interfaith Counseling Ron Baard M.Div Ph.D. 1717 West Northern Ave., Suite 105 Phoenix, AZ 85021 Phone: 602-943-4034

The bible tells us to love ourselves as we love others. Is now the time? |
Information Overview
This section highlights some of the information we glean from parish nurses, community organizations, newsletters and periodicals.
National Donor Sabbath
Nov. 8-10, 2002 is the time set aside across the nation to recognize the importance of organ donation. A web site that has useful resources to help religious groups conduct a seminar about transplant and tissue donation within their congregation is: http://www.transplantawareness.org/sabbath
HIPAA-Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996
Congress mandated the establishment of standards for the privacy of individually identifiable health information. The Privacy Rule, which establishes safeguards to protect the confidentiality of medical information became effective 4/14/01 and compliance is required by April 2003. It gives patients more control over their health information, sets boundaries on the use and release of health records, holds violators accountable with civil & criminal penalties, enables patients to find out how their information is used, limits release of information to the minimum reasonably needed for the purpose of disclosure, and gives patients the right to examine & obtain a copy of their own health records & request corrections. The Health & Human Services web site and the Office for Civil Rights has excellent information at http://hhs.gov.
Phoenix Fire Web Site
Melissa Schnucker, parish nurse at First Congregational UCC in Phoenix wanted to share a helpful web site:
Some helpful information includes safety brochures on many topics and free CPR Awareness tapes available to the public. They contain CPR demonstrations in both Spanish and English. You may order your tape by calling the Water Safety Hotline at 602-495-5555.
Code of Ethics for Nurses
The latest revision of the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements is now available in its entirety for viewing on
http://www.nursingworld.org/ethics/code/
You will not be able to print it, but you can view it. It is available for purchase.
